How Artist Will Generate Income Using the Internet: Your Fans + Your Content = Permission Market

By Rieces Pieces
How will Artist Make Money if the Music is Free? Its a question that thus far no one has been able to provide a solid answer for. Majors are spending millions marketing to the masses and with very few outlets to generate a return if the album sales are not there the loss are great and there are even fewer options available to break even on the investment. For example; Artist A releases an album with a substantial market budget, however retail sales do not provide an at par ROI for the label. This creates a chain reaction because now licensing opportunities are now diminished for the artist. The media coverage is substantially reduced and in order to rekindle that buzz more marketing dollars will need to be invested. At this point the label is reluctant to spend that money on shooting a new video or anything else that will not result in immediate profits. The artist is in the hole because the advance monies have not been recouped and likely will not have the opportunity to record a second album.

This is why I am really excited about this concept and I think of all the resources and strategies available to artists this may be the one with the best way to commercialize the art without "selling out." With this model your album sales are of least concern because your most passionate fans are providing a constant stream of revenue plus you always have a captive audience for your content.

Now artists can capitalize by combining the more traditional techniques used to market records such as a tours, radio & television and use Permission Marketing to generate revenue while they do so. An act can have a subscription service that combines an aritst channel so to speak with strict schedules that will broadcast personal time, promotional events, concerts as well as studio footage. In each city fans of the subscrition service could be granted free access to concerts or upgraded to premium seats or sections of that concert. They could also be allowed to view backstage footage and or free admission to post concert and fan only events. Instead of press invites to album release events; a certain amount of fans could be allowed to actually come to a studio and listen to the album before its released on some of the worlds best sound equipment and be encouraged to go home and share their experience via blogs and other forms of word of mouth.

This is not by any means a perfect solution and the things I am describing here are only the tip of the iceberg especially when it comes to the technology that is forthcoming such as Google Wave, etc. However, there are a few caveats to consider. For example, fans could in turn rip exclusive content from the site and post on sites like Youtube & Vimeo which would no longer make the content exclusive. There is also the danger of isolating yourselves from new fans who may not be willing to pay a monthly fee to get to know the artist. The key to combating these negatives is a great strategy. Fans who are willing to pay monthly MUST have something in it for them be it contests to win free promotional items, the ability to interact freely with other fans within these paying communities and to a certain degree some of the community must be accessible to non paying fans and there must be constant teasers and a price point low enough to implore new fans to sign up. I've listed a few resources below that discuss this model in great detail. Please feel free to explore and comment below with any feedback ideas or suggestions on this topic.

http://usershare.net/qnxlnzbe9aqc

Without furthur Adeiu leak from the new Lil Wayne "Rebirth" that should no NEEDS to be the next single; this is definately my new favorite record. This Cool & Dre produced track should be a HUGE record over the next few months. Its called "Paradice" and the spelling of the title leaves the interpretation of the meaning of the lyrics wide open.

What do YOU think?
